He was born and raised in Santiago de Compostela. As a teenager, he decided he wanted to pursue acting, and at the age of 21, he appeared in his first film, Divinas Palabras, directed by José Luis García Sánchez. His acting career began on Galician television, and he soon started landing increasingly prominent roles in both film and television. He has also participated in numerous short films and several stage productions.

Luis Zahera has over forty film credits, including As Bestas and El Reino, both directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, for which he received two Goya Awards for Best Supporting Actor, among other recognitions. Some of his notable works include Celda 211 by Daniel Monzón, Todo es silencio by José Luis Cuerda, and Mientras dure la guerra by Alejandro Amenábar. In 2024, he appears in El correo by Daniel Calparsoro and Amanece en Samaná by Rafa Cortés. That same year, he stars in Tierra de nadie by Albert Pintó and Pájaros, directed by Pau Durà. In 2025 he takes part in Zeta, directed by Dani de la Torre for Prime Video, Boulevard, directed by Sonia Méndez, and Me has robado el corazón, directed by Chus Gutiérrez.

On television, he became known with the series Mareas vivas in the late ’90s, and since then, he has taken part in numerous projects, including Vivir sin permiso for Netflix and Operación Marea Negra for Prime Video. His role as Ezequiel in Entrevías on Netflix has been particularly significant, with the show now in its fourth season. In 2025, he participates on the second season of the series Atasco for Prime Video, La Agencia for Telecinco, the second season of Clanes, for Netflix and he stars in Animal for Netflix.

On stage, he began his career with the Teatro do Aquí company, participating in productions such as Días sen gloria and Saxo tenor. Some of his standout stage performances include Titus Andronicus, directed by Andrés Lima, and La cocina and La continuidad en los parques, both directed by Sergio Peris-Mencheta. In 2024 and 2025, he tours with his monologue Chungo, in which he humorously recounts various anecdotes from his personal and professional life.
